What Your Actually Paying For

Most people searching for cheap EV car charger installations aren’t looking to cut corners. They just want a fair price from someone who knows what they’re doing.

The problem is that EV charger installation pricing is genuinely confusing. You’ll see quotes ranging from £500 to over £2,000 for what looks like the same job. And some of the cheapest headline prices turn out to be anything but once the extras start appearing.

At Dawsons Electrical, we install home and commercial EV chargers across Milton Keynes, Bedford, Northampton and the surrounding areas. We’re OZEV approved and NICEIC accredited, and we give every customer a free, honest quote before any work starts. No hidden charges, no nasty surprises on the day.

Why Cheap EV Charger Installations Cost What They DO

It helps to understand where the money actually goes. For a typical home EV charger installation in the UK, the cost breaks down roughly like this: hardware accounts for around 59% of the total, labour is about 33% and materials make up the remaining 8%.

So when you see a very low installation-only price, the maths often doesn’t add up. A qualified NICEIC electrician in the UK typically charges between £40 and £80 per hour. A proper installation, done safely and to BS7671 standards, takes time. If someone is offering it for significantly less than the market rate, it’s worth asking why.

That said, cheap EV car charger installations are genuinely achievable with the right installer. The key is knowing what a fair price includes and what the variables are that move it up or down.

At Dawsons Electrical, we understand that EV chargers are often seen as a costly investment. The high price is usually due to the combined cost of the charging unit itself, electrical infrastructure, and the specialist labour required to install it safely. However, our approach is different.

We offer cheap EV charger installation by keeping our processes efficient and transparent. Our in-house team of qualified electricians handles every part of the job, which helps us cut down on unnecessary third-party costs. We also work closely with trusted suppliers to secure high-quality chargers at competitive prices, passing those savings directly on to our customers.

Importantly, choosing cheap EV charger installation with Dawsons Electrical does not mean compromising on quality. All our installations meet current UK regulations, and we maintain the highest safety and workmanship standards on every job. We are fully insured, NICEIC-approved, and committed to delivering reliable, long-lasting solutions. If you’re looking for affordable solutions, we are here to help.

What a Realistic Price Looks Like In 2026

For most homeowners, a 7kW smart charger with a standard installation costs somewhere between £1,000 and £1,200 in 2025. That includes the unit itself and a straightforward wall-mount install on a single-phase supply, typically with up to 10 to 15 metres of cabling included.

If you’re eligible for the government’s EV Chargepoint Grant, that cost comes down considerably. The grant covers 75% of the installation cost, capped at £350. Homeowners in houses are no longer eligible, but flat owners, renters with dedicated off-street parking, and landlords can still apply. That brings a typical bill down to around £760 or less for those who qualify.

For businesses, the Workplace Charging Scheme is still open and offers up to £350 per socket for up to 40 sockets, covering 75% of total costs up to £15,000. If you’re looking at EV charger installation for your business, this makes the investment considerably more straightforward than it looks at first glance.

The Hidden Costs That Turn a Cheap Quote Expensive

This is where a lot of people get caught out. A low headline price often excludes the things that are most likely to apply to your specific property.

The biggest variable is cable run length. Most standard quotes include up to 10 or 15 metres of armoured cable. Beyond that, you’re typically looking at an extra £5 to £10 per metre in materials alone, plus additional labour. If your consumer unit is on the opposite side of the house from where you park, or you need cable running to a detached garage, that cost adds up quickly. Some installations end up paying an extra £200 to £800 just for cabling.

Groundwork is another one. If cable needs to run under a driveway, path or lawn, trenching and reinstatement is required. That can easily double the cost of what looked like a simple job.

Consumer unit upgrades are less common but worth knowing about. If your existing board is old or running near capacity, an upgrade to an 18th Edition compliant metal-clad board can add £300 to £600 to the total. Any reputable installer will flag this in a survey before the work starts, not after.

And a quick note on 22kW chargers: these require a three-phase power supply, which most UK homes don’t have. Converting from single-phase can cost anywhere from £3,000 to £15,000 depending on your grid connection. For most domestic users, a 7kW tethered charger is the better choice on cost and practicality, it will charge most EVs overnight with no issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cheaper chargers usually focus on the core job of charging your car, while premium units might add app control, energy monitoring, smart scheduling and load balancing. If you just want reliable overnight charging at the lowest price, a simpler unit can be ideal.

As a rough guide, a 7kW home charger can add around 20–30 miles of range per hour, depending on your car. For many drivers that’s enough to refill a typical day’s driving in just a couple of hours, or comfortably overnight.

No. The installation must still meet UK wiring regulations and be carried out by a qualified, accredited electrician. “Cheap” should come from efficient survey, sensible hardware choices and straightforward installs, not from cutting corners on safety or compliance.

The biggest factors are the distance from your consumer unit (fuse board) to the charger location, how easy it is to run cable, and whether your existing electrics need upgrading. A short, simple run on modern electrics is always cheaper than a long run with lots of drilling or groundworks.

Some basic chargers will simply use whatever power is available, including solar, while more advanced models can actively track and optimise solar usage. If you’re investing in solar soon, it’s worth checking compatibility now rather than paying to upgrade the charger later.

Homeowners in houses are no longer eligible for the domestic EV Chargepoint Grant. But flat owners, renters with dedicated off-street parking and landlords can still apply for 75% of costs up to £350. Businesses can access the Workplace Charging Scheme for up to £350 per socket across 40 sockets.

Yes. We install everything from single-point workplace chargers to multi-point commercial setups with load management. See our commercial EV charger installation page for more.
